Iran Claims Capture of U.S. Drone

By William Tucker

Iran’s IRNA news agency claims that the Iranian military shot down a U.S. unmanned aircraft, a RQ-170, last week. The quote came from an unnamed source who also claimed that the aircraft was mostly intact. For its part, the U.S. has not confirmed this occurrence, but unnamed sources within the government claim that a drone went missing while flying over Afghanistan. Details thus far remain inconclusive, but the type of drone that Iran claims to have captured is used for surveillance. Western governments have long been trying to peer into Iran’s nuclear program and an unmanned aircraft carrying out surveillance over a nuclear site is certainly possible. That being said, Iran has made these claims before and doesn’t always offer evidence. At the moment we should take a wait and see approach.
