EU Launches First Land Based Counter-piracy Raid

By William Tucker

Naval forces of the EU have followed up on an earlier policy change that allowed them to attack ground based assets belonging to Somali pirates. The raid took place near the Somali city of Haradhere and focused mainly on destroying fast attack craft and other pirate assets in the immediate area. According to reports, the raid was carried out by helicopter transports from two nearby naval vessels. A spokesman for the EU contingent stated that there were no casualties on either side. By all accounts the raid accomplished what it set out to do, but the objective was limited. While it is far more effective to fight piracy on the ground, a single raid will be unlikely to have a large impact. More raids will be needed and we can expect that the pirates will make changes to meet this new challenge.
