If there is one credo that has stood the test of time within the ranks of the United States military branches, it is the credo that says that no service member will be left behind. This credo stands true with American Military University and American Public University’s chapter of the Student Veterans of America. In fact, the chapter’s credo is “No Veteran Left Behind”.

July 4th, 1776: A date of powerful significance for every American, acknowledged today as one of our most important annual national holidays. It was on this date that the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, and distributed copies, so that all could see that the thirteen colonies had officially announced separation from the British Crown.

For many students, college represents a final educational obstacle to a job and the ‘real world’. For many veterans, however, college is a different thing altogether. Veteran students come back to school with a great deal of experience and a particular outlook on life imbued by years of military service and deployments.

Tragic events such as the 2014 Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, Mo. and the police-involved death of Eric Garner in New York City has spurred debate about whether or not police departments within the U.S. are becoming more militarized. The emphasis seems to be on the word “more,” implying that militarization is somehow a foregone conclusion and the question is how much more militarized they will become. Are these incidents evidence that police are increasingly militarized?

Teamwork, especially among law enforcement officers, is a crucial aspect of the job. However, the effectiveness of teams is largely dependent on leadership’s commitment to teamwork and the willingness of individuals to be strong team members. AMU criminal justice professor Michelle Beshears writes about the five distinct dysfunctions that police leaders need to be aware of that could threaten effective teams within their agencies.
