American Public University System (APUS) has renamed its business school the Dr. Wallace E. Boston School of Business to commemorate Dr. Boston’s nearly two decades of leadership as a C-level executive and board member at APUS and its parent company, American Public Education, Inc. (APEI). American Public University (APU) and American Military University (AMU) are part of the American Public University System, which is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).

Dr. Boston, now president emeritus at APUS, previously served as APUS President from 2004 to 2020 — and he also held the role of CEO of APEI through September 2019. He was instrumental in securing APEI’s initial public offering on NASDAQ in 2007.

“I’m deeply honored by the tribute and am confident that the school will help students achieve rewarding careers for generations to come,” said Dr. Boston. “I have been fortunate to work with so many dedicated individuals to help better prepare hundreds of thousands of students for successful careers across the private sector, public service and the military.”

Before his role with APUS, Dr. Boston held Chief Financial Officer positions with Sun Healthcare Group, Manor Healthcare, Meridian Healthcare and National Realty Services in a career spanning more than 40 years. He received his Ed.D. in Higher Education Management from the University of Pennsylvania in 2010. Dr. Boston also earned an MBA from Tulane University and a bachelor’s degree in history from Duke University.

APUS: A Period of Accelerated Growth

APUS has a proud history dating back to 1991. According to Military Times, the university is now the top provider of education for U.S. servicemembers using their GI Bill and the top university nationwide for veterans using their GI Bill benefit.

Dr. Boston led APUS as President and CEO during a period of accelerated growth — in both student enrollment and revenue. APUS currently has more than 85,000 students, which is roughly 10 times the size of the student body at the start of Dr. Boston’s 15-year tenure. He also helped achieve many milestones for the university including a successful initial accreditation with the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association in 2006 and the acquisition of the Hondros College of Nursing in 2013.

“Dr. Boston has an unwavering commitment to student success and has not only built our university into a premier online higher education provider, but he has also helped define the future of online education,” said APUS Board of Trustees Chairman Alfred M. Gray, the 29th Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps. “Our School of Business is building on this strong foundation, and it provides a relevant, accessible and inclusive learning environment for tomorrow’s aspiring business leaders.”
