The man suspected in bombings in New York City and New Jersey was captured Monday after a shootout with police. Two officers were wounded but not seriously hurt.

Afghan-born naturalized U.S. citizen Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28, was taken into custody in Linden, N.J., after being wounded by police who returned fire when Rahami shot an officer according to CNN and NBC News.

Rahami allegedly used explosive-packed pressure cookers connected to cellphones in two explosions over the weekend – one in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood and another in New Jersey’s Seaside Park. Police also foiled another explosion Sunday night near an Elizabeth, N.J. train station where five more devices were discovered in a trash can. It’s not the first time that pressure cookers were used in terrorist attacks; the 2013 Boston Marathon bombers used similar materials.

New York and NJ Suspect Shot at Police

A witness spotted a man sleeping Monday morning in the doorway of a bar in Linden and called the police. Responding officers realized that the sleeping man resembled the suspect wanted in the explosions and asked him to put his hands up. Instead, Rahami opened fire and shot one of the officers in the torso. Luckily, that officer was wearing a bulletproof vest and did not sustain a serious injury. A second officer was hit in the head by a bullet fragment, but he is also expected to recover.

Rahami was subsequently shot, but was later seen conscious and wounded as he was whisked away on a stretcher, according to multiple news sources. Rahami was taken by ambulance to a local hospital; there is no word on his condition or when he’ll be arraigned.
