As a society we need to continue investing in enhancing our health care practices and research. Currently, there are a few key areas in public health intelligence that are supporting global public health emergency response efforts. In this video public health analyst, Aneesah Akbar-Uqdah, elaborates on the importance for governments to invest in prevention, detection, and response to combating threats to global health security and how public health professionals can to take action to improve capacity in these areas as part of their commitment to protecting health.

About the Speaker:
Aneesah Akbar-Uqdah is a Public Health Analyst at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, Aneesah Akbar-Uqdah graduated from American Public University (APU) in 2014 with a Master’s in Intelligence Studies. Her responsibilities involve analyzing public health intelligence to support emergency response efforts like the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. She liaises with the CDC’s new Global Health Security Division, the Department of Defense and the State Department providing recommendations and technical support to senior leadership. Her thesis ‘Global Health Security: Female Engagement Teams Bridging Gaps with COIN and Medical Civil-Military Operations’ which appears in the Best Student Papers Section of the APU Library, is a blueprint for how she envisions serving her country. Aneesah also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from Bryn Mawr College and a Master of Public Health in Health Policy and Management from Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health.
