Free Syrian Army Withdraws from Ceasefire

By William Tucker

Honestly, the ceasefire never took place and all the players in the Syrian conflict knew it didn’t stand a chance. Not that they would ever admit failure when championing a plan, but the UN had to be seen doing something. In reality, there isn’t an easy answer to the Syrian conflict and most in the West do not have the appetite, or the cash, to run an intervention ala Libya. The FSA, and other rebel movements, have held in the face of the regime’s onslaught. Without some form of outside assistance that cannot hold indefinitely, however. Although several Arab nations have entered the fray by backing the opposition the true impact of such support will not be felt for some time. What we much watch for now is how successful the opposition is at targeting the regime and what comes from such attacks. Naturally, the regime will continue to suppress the population since it hasn’t faced anything more detrimental than sanctions. In essence, we are right back where we began when the opposition decided to use force in response to the regime’s crackdown. The only difference is neither side will feel the need to hold back on its use of force.
