Maritime cyber security is a major risk to the stability of the United States ports, coastlines and waterways. Close to 95 percent of all U.S. overseas trade uses 360 ports, and $1.3 trillion of cargo is carried per year, worldwide. According to CCICADA, a recent demonstration showed how a potential hacker was able to take control of a vessel by imitating its GPS system. Additionally, according to CCICADA, there are readily-available jamming devices capable of hacking into port systems, rendering them useless, and costing ports more than $1 billion per day.

Speakers at the seminar and symposium include: Rear Admiral Marshall Lytle, U.S. Coast Guard; Dr. Mark Hagerott, Deputy Director and Distinguished Professor of Cyber Security, US Naval Academy; Capt. Peter Crain, Maritime Cyber Security SME; Capt. David Moskoff, US Merchant Marine Academy; Tony Cole of FireEye; and Dr. Christopher Rodriguez, Director, NJ Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness. The seminar and symposium has a free live stream for virtual attendees.

In Homeland Security will feature articles today and Tuesday from this important event.
