Militants Attack Pakistani Air Base

By William Tucker

The BBC is reporting that several militants have launched an attack on the Minhas air base at Kamra using small arms. Reports from other outlets have stated that the militants are wearing military uniforms and are equipped with suicide vests. This information is difficult to verify as the attack is ongoing. Pakistan has reinforced the military presence at the base to fend off the assault, but thus far the increase in numbers has not translated into a decisive end to the assault. At the moment no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, although suspicion has already fallen on the Pakistani Taliban. This attack could be a retaliatory measure in response to the recent operation by the Pakistani military in South Waziristan, or perhaps a preemptive measure in anticipation of a military operation in the Swat valley. Keep in mind that this is speculation at this point, however it does fit with past trends.
