The high water also caused the Des Plaines River to rise to near flood level and flooded homes in Mundelein, requiring some homeowners to be rescued by rafts. The first one to go missing, Jimi Tar Patrick, a 19-year-old from Newtown, was last seen on July 5. Seen for the last time on July 7, the three other missing men are Mark R. Sturgis, 22, of Pennsburg, Thomas C. Meo, 21, of Plumstead, and Dean A. Finocchiaro, 18, of Middletown. Initial damage assessments by authorities found that the wildfire destroyed 57 buildings and at least 41 homes near Oroville, and fire containment was at 55 percent. The break occurred over the last several days through a process known as calving, and scientists believe the new iceberg weighs about 1 trillion tons. Scientists have been investigating the Larsen C rift to determine if it has been affected by a warming global climate. The unusual number of reported overdoses is what flagged area police to the problem, although no deaths have occurred due to the adulterated heroin.
