Ill-informed employees pose a big risk

Results of a recent study from Kaspersky Lab called into attention a big cybersecurity problem in the business world: employees.

According to the [link url=”https://usblog.kaspersky.com/security_risks_report_perception/” title=”report”], 59 percent of businesses in North America stated that the most serious data breach they’ve experienced came as a result of careless and/or uninformed employee actions.

Additionally, 56 percent of businesses said the most serious breach came from phishing/social engineering. In other words–likely more careless employee actions.

These results paint a picture of uniformed employees causing big problems.

More than 2 in 5 experienced data breaches in past year

With the number and severity of cyber attacks increasing dramatically in recent years, employee actions are now clearly in the spotlight.

Globally, 43 percent of businesses experienced data loss as a result of a breach in the past year. Even more, 20 percent of businesses suffered four or more data breaches in the past year across the globe. North American companies fared worse, as 44 percent suffered four or more breaches in the previous 12 months.

Businesses continue to spend big on cybersecurity, despite these high numbers. According to Kaspersky, 80 percent of businesses said that data protection is a major concern.

Phishing, malware, ransomware

Phishing attacks loomed large, as nearly 2 in 5 (37 percent) admitted experiencing a phishing attack in the previous 12 months. About 20 percent admitted being hit with a ransomware attack.
