UPDATE 1:10 p.m. EST: CNN reports that President Trump stated that the alleged shooter was killed.

UPDATE 11:10 a.m. EST: Law enforcement officials have named the alleged shooter as James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Ill.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was wounded Wednesday morning when a gunman opened fire on Republican lawmakers as they practiced for their annual baseball game against the Democrats.

A Capitol Hill aide and two police officers were also wounded in the shooting. Reports state that two of the wounded are in critical condition. U.S. Capitol Police, who always accompany House leaders, were quickly joined by Alexandria police – returning fire on the gunman who reportedly was using the dugout as his bunker.

The New York Times reports that Scalise (R-La.) was shot in the hip and was in stable condition at an area hospital, where he underwent surgery.  Senator Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) was among the first to reach Scalise and administered first aid.

The gunman was described a middle-aged white man and was subsequently wounded in the shootout with police that lasted several minutes. The gunman was taken into custody by Alexandria Police.

An eyewitness said the gunman was armed with a semi-automatic rifle and perhaps a pistol. The gunman fired at least 50 rounds before he was shot and captured. The gunfire reportedly went on for several minutes.

In a statement, President Donald Trump said, “The Vice President and I are aware of the shooting incident in Virginia and are monitoring developments closely. We are deeply saddened by the tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders, and all others affected.”

Trump and Pence have cancelled their morning appearances.
