cyberbullying-tv-media-educationWhether it is Nelson Muntz from The Simpsons or Regina George from Mean Girls, bullying is commonplace in many TV shows and films. October marks National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month and TV networks from Fox, NBC, Disney, which owns ABC Family, are launching anti-bullying campaigns. The impetus that led to the revamp of the messages that these television shows and films send came from the subtle but clear messages to children that dishonesty, gossip, and verbal and physical aggression are perfectly acceptable ways to influence your social world towards your own personal gain. Yet, the new message promotes being proactive and dealing with topics like bullying in school as well as the new trend of digital bullying.

It is no wonder so many movies, TV shows, video games, and other forms of entertainment include bullying themes. It is because almost everyone can relate to stories about bullying. When a storyline reflects bullying in the real world, it is both compelling for audiences while also acting as a powerful tool for change.
