IHS is proud to announce that we’ll be featuring cutting-edge articles from the new, open-access publication: Global Security and Intelligence Studies (GSIS).
GSIS is a bi-annual, peer-reviewed journal designed to provide a forum for the academic community to engage in dialogue about contemporary global security and intelligence issues. The journal is published by the Policy Studies Organization (PSO), a political science think tank based in Washington, D.C.
The journal features articles from experts in the fields of intelligence analysis, political science, international security, homeland security, and many other topics and disciplines – along with in-depth book reviews.
Dr. Yoav Gortzak is the managing editor of GSIS. A former faculty member at Arizona State University, Dr. Gortzak is currently an associate professor in the international relations program at American Military University.
“One of the ideas behind the GSIS journal was the relative lack of journals that encourage the overlap between academia and the practitioners in the policy world. By producing GSIS, we hope to foster dialogue and discussion among practitioners and academics,” stated Dr. Gortzak. “Most academic journals are not easily accessible to those who don’t have official institutional affiliations; by making the journal open-access, we hope to engage a broader audience that is interested in important security and intelligence issues, and we hope to broaden the scope of debate about these issues.”
“The greatest threat to U.S. homeland security is the potential use of a weapon of mass destruction against the United States by an external non-state actor. This may not be the most likely threat, but it would be the greatest threat in terms of its severity. In the near future, I think that we have to be prepared for smaller, but painful, attacks conducted by home-grown ISIS sympathizers, or individuals who share its ideology.” ~ Dr. Yoav Gortzak.
The GSIS journal also accepts manuscripts from the general public:
“We are looking for original research that is rigorous and thought-provoking, and that advances our understanding of important security and intelligence matters, both academically and in practice,” said Dr. Gortzak. “Additionally, we seek the reasoned perspectives of experts who have a unique view of national and international security and intelligence issues, and who want to advance policy debates on those issues.”
In Homeland Security will feature a series of thought-provoking articles that first appeared in the GSIS journal. The first will be The Future of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles by Lt. Col. Mike Fowler, Assistant Professor of Military and Strategic Studies at the United States Air Force Academy. Look out for part one in this new series in the coming days.
