Two students are dead and at least 18 were injured in [link url=”http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/01/23/2-dead-19-injured-in-kentucky-school-shooting-suspect-held.html” title=”a school shooting that occurred at Marshall County High School in Benton, Kentucky”] just before 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday. The 15 year-old suspect, who has not been identified, opened fire in a common area just before school began, striking and killing one female and one male student. According to officials, [link url=”http://abcnews.go.com/US/wounded-shooting-kentucky-high-school-suspect-custody/story?id=52549343″ title=”the shooter was taken into custody”] and will be charged with murder.

In Texas on Monday morning, [link url=”http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-texas-high-school-shooting-20180122-story.html” title=”one female student was shot after a male student opened fire”] in the high school’s cafeteria just before 8:00 a.m. The incident occurred at Italy High School, in Italy, Texas and the suspected gunman, a 16-year-old male student, who was not identified, fled the scene but was taken into custody a short time later. The victim, 16-year-old Noelle Jones, [link url=”http://www.wfaa.com/news/15-year-old-ellis-county-school-shooting-victim-recovering-and-full-of-hope/510801159″ title=”was shot in the abdomen and neck”], but is recovering at a hospital in Dallas, Texas. 
  3. The bodies of five men that went missing after an [link url=”https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/oil-gas-rig-explodes-oklahoma-five-workers-missing-n840031″ title=”oil rig explosion on Monday in Oklahoma”], have been found. The five men were found Tuesday afternoon in [link url=”https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/bodies-five-men-found-after-oklahoma-oil-rig-disaster-n840411″ title=”an area known as the doghouse”], an office room on the rig’s floor. Seventeen other workers narrowly escaped the explosion and ensuing fire that occurred at the oil and gas drilling rig in Pittsburg County, Oklahoma, and [link url=”https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/oil-gas-rig-explodes-oklahoma-five-workers-missing-n840031″ title=”the cause of the explosion remains under investigation”]. 
  4. [link url=”https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/23/us/earthquake-tsunami-alaska.html” title=”A magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck the Gulf of Alaska”] very early Tuesday morning, prompting tsunami warnings and sparking fear among residents along the west coast of the United States. The quake occurred around 12:31 a.m., about 180 miles offshore from Kodiak, Alaska at a depth of about 15 miles, with shaking felt as far away as Anchorage. [link url=”https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us2000cmy3#executive” title=”The United States Geological Survey (USGS) indicates that the quake was a result of a strike-slip fault”], about 55 miles away from the Pacific and North America subduction plates.

Residents across the island of Java, in Indonesia, [link url=”https://www.cbsnews.com/news/earthquake-indonesia-jakarta-java-no-tsunami-warning/?ftag=CNM-00-10aac3a” title=”were rattled by a 6.0 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday”], sending people fleeing into the streets as buildings swayed. The quake was at a depth of 27 miles, centered off the western coast of Java, and about 95 miles southwest of Jakarta. Several buildings and homes in the Lebak District suffered damaged, [link url=”https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/908502/Indonesia-earthquake-6-4-magnitude-Jakarta-evacuation-buildings-shaking-Twitter-reaction” title=”including a school where at least 8 children were injured”], and houses along coastal West Java also suffered damage from the moderately strong earthquake. 
  6. Mount Mayon continues to erupt in the Philippines, [link url=”http://www.foxnews.com/world/2018/01/23/philippines-volcano-lava-display-one-biggest-yet-as-alert-level-rises-scientists-say.html” title=”spewing massive amounts of lava and ash, causing villagers to flee to safety”]. The most recent eruptions are becoming increasingly dangerous, with lava shooting up to 2,000 feet high and flowing almost 2 miles from the crater. The dangerous eruptions are also spewing ash nearly 3 miles into the sky, and [link url=”http://time.com/5113723/philippines-mount-mayon-volcano-erupts/” title=”pyroclastic flows–superheated gas and volcanic debris–have advanced at least 3 miles down the volcano’s slopes”]. 
  7.  In Japan, [link url=”http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory/injured-apparent-volcano-eruption-japan-ski-resort-52537992″ title=”a sudden and unexpected eruption of the Mount Kusatsu-Shirane volcano”] on Tuesday injured 11 people and killed one, as volcanic rocks and black ash rained down on skiers in a popular hot springs resort, Kusatsu Onsen. Although all 80 people were accounted for, authorities were still combing the area to be certain no one was trapped when [link url=”https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/asiapacific/fresh-tremors-halt-search-after-japan-volcano-eruption-9890860″ title=”search operations were suspended on Wednesday after new volcanic activity was detected”]. According to officials, the eruption caught the Japan Meteorological Agency off guard, and access to the the mountain was immediately banned following the quake.

[link url=”http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/japan-earthquake-today-aomori-hokkaido-warning-latest-news-updates-alerts-a8175341.html” title=”A 6.2 magnitude struck off the coast of Honshu, Japan on Wednesday”], the third earthquake to strike along the Ring of Fire–a horseshoe-shaped seismically active area–in the Pacific Ocean in just two days. There were no reported injuries or damages from the quake, which was centered about 64 miles to the north-east of Honshu at a depth of 24 miles. This quake joins [link url=”http://abcnews.go.com/US/scientists-rash-earthquakes-volcanic-eruptions-ring-fire-connected/story?id=52548632″ title=”a number of other incidents that have been occurring along the Ring of Fire”], including two volcanic eruptions and two other strong earthquakes, that have been recorded within the last 36 hours. 
  9. An unidentified guest was seen [link url=”http://www.foxnews.com/travel/2018/01/23/carnival-cruise-ship-guest-missing-after-going-overboard.html” title=”going overboard on a Carnival cruise ship, the Triumph”], when it was traveling from New Orleans to Mexico on Sunday. The 44-year-old woman, who was seen going overboard on the second day of the cruise, is still missing, and the Mexican Navy has taken over search and rescue operations. This is the second incident that has occurred on a Carnival ship in just two days–on Friday, [link url=”http://time.com/5113711/passenger-carnival-cruise-balcony-fall-accident/” title=”a woman died on the Carnival Elation after falling from her balcony”] on the 14th floor and landing on the 11th floor.
