FBI Questions Rutgers Student about Massive Cyber Attack

NJ.com reporters Adam Clark and Mark Mueller say that the FBI has interviewed a Rutgers University computer science student who is said to be a well-known cybersecurity blogger. The student may have been the author of the code that caused a large Internet disruption in October 2016. These cases are easy when the FBI has copies of the code and finds similarities in the code authorship.

Top 10 Cybersecurity Must-Haves for 2017

Healthcare IT News author Jessica Davis discussed ways to avoid cybersecurity problems in 2017. Of the 10 points in her article, I found her points three and five to be particularly important.

Points 3 and 5 mentioned the need for dedicated Sec-Op teams and better employee training:

  • Dedicated Sec-Op teams. “Depending on ‘Bob the IT guy’ who is not a security expert to defend a network is not effective,” Scott said. Organizations need a dedicated Sec-Op team to handle security, hunt threats, educate staff on latest threats and perform penetration tests.
  • Better employee training. “Most companies train once, if at all, and may never revisit the information,” Myers said. “By comparison, most places have fire drills regularly and frequently, so that employees will know without thinking what they need to do in an emergency.” Education also needs to be simplified, to make it easier to understand and commit to memory. According to Hepp, organizations should conduct mock phishing attempts to raise staff awareness. For McMillan, organizations must go deeper: “Computer-based training may be easy, but it is hardly effective,” he said. “Use multiple platforms, but ensure that some methods used involve experiential learning such as tabletops, exercises and tests, among others.”

Management may decline the cost of upgrading security software, while looking for “the easy way” to keep computers protected. However, security problems can find your company anyway.
