U.S. Capitol Police are informing all staff in the Capitol complex to seek shelter and stay in place after reports of shots fired within the Capitol Visitors Center. The White House was also placed into lockdown after a separate incident when a person attempted to jump the fence around the executive mansion.

First responders have arrived at the Capitol to treat possible injuries. Employees of the Capitol compound received an email shortly before 3:00 p.m. ET stating that nobody should attempt to either enter or leave their building and all employees should seek immediate shelter. There are reports of minor injuries to a U.S. Capitol police officer.

“There are a lot of nervous people in the building … The area is very secure, I’m surprised that there is somebody in there with a handgun, because there are Capitol Police all over that Capitol area,” stated CNN Law Enforcement Analyst Art Roderick.

Fox News reported at 3.15 p.m. that a Security Director for the Congressional Committee told them that the “Shooter is down and is on his way to the hospital.”
