$106 Million Center for Cyber Security Studies

The U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) officially broke ground for its new Center for Cyber Security Studies in late October.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new $106-million facility took place on October 21 in Annapolis, MD and involved more than 300 people. The Navy plans to use the new Cyber Center for real-world training to prepare midshipmen for handling cyber threats. The educational facility will educate about preventing intrusion and bolstering cybersecurity practices.

“This is a significant step in the process of streamlining our cyber education capabilities here at the Naval Academy with the needs of the fleet and Department of Defense. This will be a state-of-the-art facility where our very best and brightest will get cutting edge training and education in the cyber field. I believe the building serves as yet another attraction the Naval Academy has to offer to future Midshipmen.” — [link url=”http://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=97376″ title=”Vice Adm. Rear Adm. Grace Hopper

The Navy announced that the building will be named after Rear Adm. Grace Hopper, aka the “mother of computing.” Hooper worked as a computer scientist on the first computer, the Harvard Mark 1, and worked as a pioneer in computer coding. She specialized in converting mathematical code into language.

Officials expect construction of the new facility to be completed in September 2019.

Increased focus on cybersecurity

This event is the latest in a series of cyber-related investments by various parts of the U.S. military in recent years. Recently, the Navy [link url=”https://amuedge.com/u-s-air-force-navy-commit-millions-cybersecurity/” title=”agreed to a $100 million cyber contract”], while the Air Force [link url=”https://amuedge.com/u-s-air-force-navy-commit-millions-cybersecurity/” title=”committed $22 million”] to cyber-related projects.
