The Transportation Security Administration  (TSA) has revealed that 26 guns were found inside of passenger bags at Chicago’s airports in 2014.

According to the agency, 20 guns were seized at security checkpoint at O’Hare International Airport. Six guns were detected at the checkpoint at Midway International AirportTSA Gun Check. Statistics for the year were pulled from reported filed by the TSA and the Department of Homeland Security.

In 2013 officials for the TSA discovered 16 guns at O’Hare International Airport, while Midway travelers attempted to board plans with 13 guns.

Throughout the United States, a total of 2,212 firearms were discovered at security checkpoints. TSA officials revealed that of those weapons, 83 percent were loaded.

It is not illegal to travel with firearms, however TSA regulations require that weapons be kept unloaded in a hard-sided, locked case within checked luggage.

Passengers are required to declare any weapons they attempt to travel with. Failure to report weapons most often leads to the confiscation of a travelers firearms.
