UN Security Council Condemns Syria Violence

By William Tucker

The United Nations Security Council formally condemned the violence against unarmed protesters in Syria today, but did not call for a Libyan style intervention. The resolution did little to dissuade the Assad regime from continuing the assault on the city of Hama. Recent reports indicate that Syrian soldiers, backed by tanks and artillery, have moved into the city center to break the protests. As I have written here in the past, the Syrian regime will remain in power so long as the military doesn’t fracture. The Syrian revolt has been characterized by severely repressive measures over the past few months, but it hasn’t stopped the mass protests. The military has not shown it can end the revolt, but hasn’t yet broken. Something will have to give soon, and its likely to be a rather bloody affair.
