Violence Continues in Yemen

By William Tucker

An estimated 75 people have been killed over the last three days in Sanaa, Yemen as opposition protesters continue their call for the President to step down. In response, Republican Guard forces loyal to President Saleh have targeted both opposition military forces and unarmed protesters. This most recent mass protest, and resulting violence, came as the President agreed yet again to GCC mediation only to create a situation where any transition agreement would fail. Saleh’s latest move is in response the creation of the National Transitional Council where the different opposition factions have finally come together. For the first time since the crisis began Saleh sees a potent threat, but challenges for the opposition remain.
